Adolf Hitler, born April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn, Austria, grew up to be Germany’s dictator in the 1930s and early 40s, killing millions of Jews in the process. His childhood and young adulthood may be cited by some as the reason for his oppressive attitude and vicious behavior that would be very clear later in his profound life. Adolf Hitler, one the world’s most recognizable and notable leaders, lived a life marked by torture and hate, a childhood full of unfortunate events, an honorable military career, and a defiant vocation as Germany’s dictator during World War II. Adolf was born in Austria, in an upper boarder town east of Munich, and baptized as a Catholic. His family was middle-class, his father Alois working as a midlevel customs official. Western culture refers to the societal structures and norms that arose from Ancient Greece and spread throughout Europe. After this period, Charles II was asked back to be head of the monarchy by the parliament, however was placed under strict limitations that saw his powers restricted, and played a founding role in the idea that nobody was above the law. These actions thus saw the establishment of a separation of powers, a concept that has been put into place in the Australian legal system as well. Separation of powers is an integral part of the Australian legal system, as it stops any one branch of government gaining arbitrary power over the people. Discovery of Australia Terra Annulus, meaning land belonging to no one, is a term used to describe a new found land that gives permission for colonization. This meant that those native to Australia, with the land being declared terra annulus’ were stripped of any land rights or legal rights. This gave way to the formation of the Australian legal system as it is known today, as the English had free reign to build society as they saw fit. Development of Australian Parliamentary System Like England, the established ways of state and federal parliament were based on a institutional framework- a set of guidelines as to how run parliament and how power is distributed. The Australian Constitution and its state counterparts are the guidelines upon which the federal and state legal systems are based. This includes a Governor, whom acts as a representative of the Queen, showing how the English idea of a Head of State was still instilled in the Australian legal system. Like England, the New South Wales Government – as well as the six other states bar Queensland, Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory – and the Australian Federal Government has a bicameralism system of parliament. Bicameralism is to have two houses of parliament, in Australian state and federal these are the upper house – Senate – and lower house – House of Representatives. This concept was brought from England to Australia, where the lower house is voted in by the people and these are the ones who propose legislative change, whilst the upper house is decided from within government, must also pass any proposed bills and can keep a balance and check of power from the elected government, to ensure that arbitrary power is not gained. The Western legal traditions from England were new colony. Development of Australian Legislation Much of early Australian legislation was based upon English law, as it was the founder of the colony. However it was Blackstone who said that English law would only apply in the new colony as long as it was applicable to the context, under new circumstances. The idea that to move forward as a colony, that some laws would need to be changed to promote growth, can be seen in the Cable Case, where Henry Cable was labeled as a ‘laborer’ and as a ‘new settler of this place’ instead of a invoice, and treated to the legal rights of those without criminal records, which was against English Law which found anyone with a criminal record to be civilly dead, that is, to have no legal rights. Like many Canadian children, Andrea spends twenty-five to thirty hours in school each week- sitting. Andreas school kept her mind active. Too bad they forgot about her body. She is just one of the thousands of Canadian children who cant even run around the block. According to recent studies, children who participate in daily physical activities are more fit, have better health habits, and perform better academically. Therefore it is my belief that all Canadian schools should balance academics with quality, daily physical education. School children who participate in daily physical activities are more fit. In North America, forty percent of all five to eight year olds can be classified as obese, and beyond the age of twelve only ten percent of Canadian youth are active enough to receive any kind of health benefit. I am proud to be among this minority, however; I recognize that our nation is experiencing a health crisis. What we need to do (both parents and students) is encourage the introduction of a new school program, which develops and maintains cardio-respiratory efficiency, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. This program must be for everyone, not just the elite athlete. We need a program that encourages a positive attitude towards personal fitness by meeting the needs and interests of all students. Most importantly, the program must be fun. By providing a series of planned activities on a daily basis, we can be sure to see a dramatic increase in physical fitness. Furthermore, active children will develop better health habits. If students become more aware of their bodies, they will appreciate the relationship between exercise and health. They will take an interest in this relationship and become responsible for their personal health care. In turn, active children will shy away from smoking, alcohol, and substance abuse. Students will be reluctant to take part in such activities because they will be fully aware of the negative effects on the body. These children will also develop a positive attitude towards an active lifestyle. Continual physical education will instill in the child the desire to participate and the ability to use leisure time wisely. A childs eating habits will also improve. The active child will choose their foods more carefully to reflect their new, healthy lifestyle. They will feast on the natural sugars in apples and oranges, rather than on the sugar of a Twix bar. And water will be the most refreshing drink on the market. Patterns developed early in life are likely to be carried on through to adulthood. What a wonderful life! A third advantage to vigorous physical activity for the student is enhanced academic performance. Exercise increases alertness as well as energy levels; therefore the active child comes to school ready to learn. A study done by Taylor Taylor in 1989 states: An individual enjoys improved concentration, enhanced memory and learning, enhanced creativity, better problem-solving ability, and improved mood state for up to two hours following exercise. Students who are comfortable with their bodies tend to show a general boost in confidence. They become more willing to take risks in other areas of school life, including academics. Self-confidence allows a child to participate more freely in the classroom. A child who exhibits low self-esteem will take fewer risks and undoubtedly miss out on many opportunities in life. Sports also allows the student to practice social skills in an informal environment. Skills such as; co-operation, responsibility, leadership, communication and self-control.
